| Towering birch trees and the stark shapes of leafless trees in winter are the inspiration for my tree series. My fascination with sunflowers continues throughout my monotypes and paintings. What is a monotype? A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print that is often called the “painterly print”. Each print is unique since there are no permanent marks on the plate to make a multiple edition. There are many techniques for creating monotypes. For these I rolled and painted printing inks onto a plexiglass plate and then manipulated the ink with various tools. The plate was then printed on dampened paper through a printing press. For some of these prints parts of the plate were re-painted and put through the press again on the same print, resulting in successive layers of color. |
